WISD End of Year FAQ

End of Year FAQ for Wylie Parents and Students

Why is Wylie ISD Closing Due to Coronavirus Concerns?

Governor Greg Abbott, on April 17, ordered that all Texas schools remain closed through the end of the 2019-20 school year. As such, WISD facilities will remain closed through May and all District events and activities will be canceled during that time. Wylie ISD At-Home Learning will continue through the official end of the District's school year – May 21st, 2020.

Will At-Home Learning Continue During this Time?

Yes. At-Home Learning will continue through the end of the school year. Teachers have communicated with parents and students about the continuation of At-Home Learning. Parents who have questions can contact their campus through email.

Will Athletic and Fine Arts Competitions Still be Held?

No. The UIL has stated that no competitions, practices, rehearsals, or workouts will take place during the COVID-19 closure, and with Governor Abbott's announcement that schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, all remaining UIL activities are also canceled.

How will the Closure Impact the STAAR Test?

Governor Greg Abbott announced that he has waived the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) testing requirements for the 2019-20 school year.

Will WISD Students be Required to Take Final Exams this Year?

Students will not be taking final exams.

Will WISD’s Closure Impact Graduation?

Due to the closure of Wylie ISD through the end of the school year and the circumstances of COVID-19, our original plans for the 2020 WHS graduation on May 22nd have unfortunately been canceled. We do have an alternative plan that is subject to CDC guidelines and state/local mandates.

Wylie High School will host in-person graduation for the Class of 2020 on Friday, June 19th at Hugh Sandifer Stadium.

The event will be held at 9:00 pm as we plan to avoid the heat of a summer day along with avoiding the possibility of the sun shining in the faces of the attendees. Each senior will receive five tickets as mandated by the Texas Education Agency. This is a measure put in place to assure that we can organize the event using social distancing guidelines. Graduation will also be live-streamed for friends and families to watch from the comfort of home.

The state is allowing schools to host outdoor graduation ceremonies and we will follow strict TEA regulations to help provide a safe event and maintain social distancing. Guidelines will be in place for parking, arrival times, health status of attendees, seating assignments, facility use, spacing of graduates and exiting Hugh Sandifer Stadium. Wylie ISD will share all of the guidelines and restrictions in detail as we get closer to the ceremony.

In the event of bad weather, the first makeup date is Saturday, June 20th at 9:00 pm. at Hugh Sandifer Stadium. The second makeup date is Sunday, June 21st at 9:00 pm.

Seniors and their families are also invited to a Senior Night Open House at the high school on Thursday, June 18th from 6:00-8:00 pm. This will be an opportunity for seniors to come and walk the halls and say goodbye to their teachers. Hotdogs and refreshments will be served. More information will be released on how we can still host this evening following social distancing guidelines.

Will we still have Baccalaureate?

Baccalaureate will be held virtually. We invite our graduates, families and friends to gather online as we host a virtual WHS Class of 2020 Baccalaureate. The service will be pre-recorded and streamed on Sunday, May 24th at 2:00 pm. Join us as we celebrate and honor our graduating senior class! We will send out the streaming information as it gets closer.

What about the WHS Sports Banquet?

The WHS Sports Banquet has been canceled. The Booster Club shared the sports banquet slideshow on their Facebook account and plan to announce the scholarship winners via social media.

We ask that you have your online enrollment completed and documents uploaded by Sunday, May 3rd at 8:00 pm To start the enrollment process, you will go to http://www.wyliebulldogs.org/enrollment/begin_the_enrollment_process.
