“We’re going to the ‘ship!”
That’s the chant of the Wylie boys golf team after claiming a second-place finish at the Region 1-5A tournament last Wednesday and Thursday, solidifying a birth in the Class 5A state tournament in May.
The Bulldogs shot a two-day team score of 628 – only a narrow four strokes behind regional champion Amarillo Tascosa (624) – but solid enough to claim one of the three the state invites along with the Rebels as well as third-place Burleson Centennial (642).
Individually, Carson Groban and Casen James each shot two sub-80 rounds to pace the Bulldogs. Groban’s 153 (75-78) landed him with a sixth-place finish. James carded a 156 (77-79) to finish in tenth place. Both received all-region accolades for their efforts.
WHS advances to the Class 5A state tournament May 5-6 in Georgetown.
